Are the Olympic MEDALS real gold and silver?
Yes, but not quite.
The bronze and silver MEDALS in the Olympics are made of pure copper and silver.
The gold medal is special, it is made of pure silver gold plating. Semi-finished products will be sent to a certified Laboratory in Switzerland for gilding. Through an electrolysis process, each gold medal is coated with six grams of gold, 75 microns thick, followed by a special type of enamel.
In June 2016, the Ioc executive board adopted a resolution in Prague to revise the medal design for the Summer Games, which had been in use for more than 20 years. It is the first time since 1976 that the IOC has agreed to change the design of an Olympic medal.
The most common materials military medals are made from are zinc alloy and bronze.
